Abstract：A new ROI video coding method is presented based on MPEG-4.In order to improve the video coding gain and the compression quality,the intra macroblock prediction,adaptive block-size transformation (ABT) and adaptive block-size motion estimation (ABME) are applied to ROI coding,then error propagation from other regions to ROI is prevented by encoding border macroblocks of the ROI in intra mode.Furthermore,content-based bit allocation strategy is proposed according to MPEG-4 rate-distortion model.Software simulation results show that the method can improve the image quality both objectively and subjectively compared to MPEG-4 and other ROI coding methods.
