In some satellite communications applications

we need to perform Direction of Arrival (DOA) angle estimation under the restriction that shorting of receivers when receiving and processing the signals impinged on an array antenna.In essence

this demands that using a limited number of receivers to process a large number of DOA signal.This paper proposes a method named Subarray synthesis based Direction of Arrival angle estimation.An equivalent output covariance matrix is firstly synthesized based on a given set of subarray antennas’ output covariance matrices;impinged signal’s DOA estimation is then performed based on the equivalent covariance matrix;Subarray optimization criterion and method are also discussed.Monte Carlo simulations verified the effectiveness of the estimation method.
