an efficient method is presented to improve the speed of minimum distortion encoding in vector quantization. By using a group of distortion measurement criterion and a presorted codebook
a large number of codewords will be rejected before computing MMSE for them. Using this method results in a considerable reduction in the number of operations. The result shows that the reduction of computation is up to 93% in the encoding time against full search method. Little precomputation and extra storage are required.
