This paper proves that when a parity matrix of linear binary block code contains a J dimensional orthogonal submatrix
state number of the trellis to be stored in the Vi-terbi decoding is reduced to 2n-k-j+1 from 2n-k and the performance of the decoding is not changed. Lower and upper bounds of the dimension of the orthogonal sub-matrixes are given at the last.
