General analytical expressions for evaluating the jitter
performance of a PWM fiber optic system with arbitrary levels and given system parameters are presented. The results of the calculation show that four-level PWM fiber optic system is the optimum compromise between jitter performance and circutray complexity. In comparison with a PCM fiber optic system
a PWM fiber optic system not only shows better errer performance but also exhibits superior jitter performance.
