A high power relativistic backward wave oscillator has been constructed and studied.A typical electron beam of 1 8kA is accelerated across a diode potential of 450 keV and then guided through a section of corrugated waveguide by an axial magnetic field of 20KG.Peak microwave power of 100MW at 9 3GHz has been observed in the circular TM 01 mode.We analyze the nature and frequency of the beam wave interaction of the BWO by use of consistent linearized theory
and describe the experiments and measurements to determine the frequency and power of the device.An eletromagnetic particle in cell code MAGIC has been used to investigate the nonlinear beam wave interaction.Comparisons between the experimentally measured results
and the analytic and numerical simulations of the device are made.
