A still picture hierarchical coding scheme based on wavelet analysis was proposed .The image was decomposed by discrete wavelet traneform

the transformed subimage was encoded by classified vector quanhzation

the class informahon was self-generated accortling to similarity between subimages. Experiments proved that this new scheme performs better than published schemes in the aspects of high compression ratio and high image quantization.
