Based on the Bayes decision theory
the performance of a tree classfier with overlap has been studied in this paper. A new term called quality factor Q is defined which is used to evaluate the overall performance of the tree classifier. The analytic formula of Q in terms of the number of the pattern classes N
the number of tree levels M and the error rate has been derived. Theoretical results show that there exist certain optimum conditions in which the quality factor Q is maximum.
