The effect of PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) to high-speed optic communication system has drawn more and more attention nowadays, and the measurement of PMD is of much importance.ITU-T G.650 Recommendation has recommended several approaches to measure PMD and the Jones Matrix Eigenanalysis Method is regarded as the chief one.Using Jones Matrix Eigenanalysis Method,we can get the most comprehensive information about optic fiber’s PMD,and this method has very high precision and broad measurement range. The principle of Jones Matrix Eigenanalysis Method for measuring PMD is illustrated in this paper, and an automated measuring system based on it is introduced, with some experimental results.Instead of using a polarimeter recommended in G.650,we use a polarizer controlled by a step-up motor to measure Jones optic Vector in this system, which is much cheaper.
