SPIHT algorithm yields some of the best compression performance levels as reported in the literature.However

because the location information is alsways interleaved with the quantization information in the output bit stream

SPIHT tends to be highly sensitive to channel noise.In this paper

we propose a new source-channel coding method based on the original SPIHT.It makes use of embedded code stream instead of changing it.The channel coding can be fulfilled at the same time while doing source coding.The method greatly enhances the resilience to channel errors

which is important for using SPIHT in practice especially in wireless applications.
